As expected, the Gilas Pilipinas suffered a defeat in their first game in the FIBA Asia Cup against Lebanon.
Only the first quarter was close. After that, the size and chemistry of Lebanon was too much to handle.
The reality is Gilas was actually the more skilled team. From dribbling to play making, Lebanon was not near the level of Gilas.
But, basketball is a team game. So, the size and chemistry of Lebanon persisted and destroyed Gilas. The following game, they managed to get the victory with their superior talent.
Now, it was laughable to hear our head coach downplay the defeat and state that the team got a good learning experience.
You know why?
Because only a handful of our guys there has a shot of making the 2023 FIBA World Cup roster. So, even if the team build up chemistry, it is not that big of a positive when another set of players will be there during the real deal tournament.
Here is the positive though. A very bad showing here in this tournament should increase the animosity of fans and analysts against coach Chot Reyes.
And that will increase the likelihood of him being replaced.
The reality is in his coaching staff alone, there are two names there who could be more successful than him due to different reasons.
Yes. Coach Nenad and coach Tim Cone.
