As expected, the 2022 rookie batch is not as impactful as an average year but at the end of the day, we still have a lot of young players who are proving that they deserved to play here in the PBA.
Here is my current top 5 Rookie of the Year candidate!
#5 Jeo Ambohot
I was really high about Jeo because of his combination of length and willingness to attempt three-point shots. The length was obvious and useful but I did not expect that he will still be this inefficient from beyond the arc. Once Jeo starts to increase his efficiency, he can be a much better player.
#4 Encho Serrano
Serrano is easily the rookie with the most highlights this early into the season. His jumping ability is in full display. He can do a lot of things on both ends. He is currently producing 8.0 points, 44% FG, 4.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game.
#3 Justin Arana
Arana received a lot of great review from the top centers in the league. He was even praised as a smaller version of Junemar Fajardo. The main issue of Arana is his inefficiency. His post scoring was greener than expected. Although, he was more physical than projected.
#2 Tyler Tio
Tio entered the draft as the most hyped shooter. He is living up to that hype. He is currently producing 10.7 points, 1.7 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 2.3 three-pointers made and 50% 3FG per game. If he can keep up his super-efficient shooting, Tio will end up as a top 5 in this draft.
#1. Ato Ular
So, the injury to Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser ended up as a net positive for Blackwater as they found a very uniquer bigman in Ato Ular. Ato is currently averaging 14.4 points, 7.2 rebounds and 57% FG per game. His touch is prestine. That makes me believe that he has a good potential of developing a good outside shot.
