With the weak draft class, a high number of injuries and with superstars leaving for International leagues, the current crop of Most Improved Player candidate is longer than usual.
I think, we are about to get the fiercest battle ever for the MIP award!
Here are my current top 10 list!
#10 Arvin Tolentino
I am a big fan of the sudden focus of Arvin into being a reliable catch-and-shoot player. He is super effective in the role this year, and if he can further increase his numbers, he may have a better case moving forward.
#9 Roi Sumang
We can say that Northport may have been the last chance for Roi to prove that he is a decade-long player in the PBA. With his production this tournament, I think he has proven that already.
#8 Rodney Brondial
With the injury to Vic Manuel and with the trust of coach Leo Austria, Rodney suddenly erupted to become one of the best off-ball operating bigman in the league. He is producing 7.5 points, 9.8 rebounds and 1.0 assist per game.
#7 Calvin Oftana
For me, a breakout tournament from a sophomore player is not as valued as the breakouts on more veteran players. That is the reason why I have Calvin at #7 instead of top 5.
#6 Joseph Gabayni
The fourth year center is the brightest spot in the winless campaign of Terrafirma in this Philippine Cup. Joseph averaged 10.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.0 block per game. He looks like a capable starting center.
