Spin.ph broke the news that the counter of the San Miguel Corporation to the recent deal of the MVP group. After the MVP group got scrutinized for their Oftana deal, the SMC group is coming up with an even much bigger exchange.
Here is the current reported structure!
Ginebra received: Jamie Malonzo and Von Pessumal
Northport received: Arvin Tolentino, Jeff Chan, Prince Caperal, Kent Salado
San Miguel received: future draft picks
This trade is not as bad as the Stanley Pringle to Ginebra trade. But, it is a bad package for Jamie Malonzo. Again, I look at Malonzo as the guy with the highest potential among all the players in the PBA today that is under 27 years old.
The guy produced 17.2 points, 10.3 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.9 steals, 1.4 blocks and 1.7 three-pointers made per game in the last Philippine Cup.
The guy can be the next MVP after the era of Junemar Fajardo. A monster already but still not at the peak of his power.
So, a package of a good young player in Arvin Tolentino, a serviceable but will be retiring soon veteran in Jeff Chan and two end-of-the-bench players should not be enough to get the most promising young stud in the league.
Let us analyze them one-by-one.
Arvin is on the same age as Jamie and I think he has a pretty good potential too and already an awesome outside shooter. But I think he can only cover 40% of the value of Malonzo.
Jeff Chan has a name value but do not be fooled. The guy was known as a sniper but he only shot 27% from beyond the arc last Philippine Cup. He is also 39 years old! I think he can only cover 10%.
Prince Caperal and Kent Salado should not get that much trade value because their usage are very low. Salado only played three games! Now, let us put some value into the potential of Kent and the modern skillset of Prince. I think, each can only cover 10% of the value of Jamie.
So, 40% plus 10% plus 10% plus 10% = 70%.
I think the current rumored package is 30% away from being a fair one. I actually think that a 1st round pick can cover 15%. So, adding two 1st round picks in my eyes could lock the deal as a fair exchange.
