Gilas Controversy: La Salle superstar can play as a locale but not invited to Gilas?

Schonny Winston is clearly the most dominant player in the UAAP this season. He is averaging 21.3 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 3.0 steals, 43% FG and 33% 3FG per game.

His pull-up shooting is deadly. And defensively, he is also a workhorse. His instinct in getting steals could be special too.

So, every Filipino should be happy to know that Schonny Winston will be allowed to play as a locale player for Gilas!

According to a report from Homer Sayson of Spin.ph, the letter was dated October 27, 2022. Gilas unveiled their Gilas pool for the fifth window, a day after.

So, Gilas do not want him to be part of the pool? There are several UAAP superstars in the pool and that even includes his teammate, Kevin Quiambao.

And Schonny is playing better than him. So, why was he not a part of pool?

I expect the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas to answer that if pressure will come from the fans. And I think, we deserve to hear an answer.

But in reality, this could be the key to the real reason. Filipino-Foreigners are only allowed by some of the International league in Asia as a continental/local import if they played for the national team.

So, if Schonny will play for the national team, the number of International league teams that will make an offer for him will balloon to the sky!

If you are the PBA, do you want that to happen? It will surely decrease the chance that Schonny will join the PBA draft.
