The San Miguel Beermen legend that molded a Ginebra legend!

Basketball fans and players alike were left in shock after Barangay Ginebra point guard LA Tenorio announced his Stage 3 colon cancer diagnosis. The 38-year-old, known for his remarkable career in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), revealed the news on the league's official website on Tuesday.

Despite the challenging diagnosis, Tenorio remained optimistic and expressed his determination to fight the disease. He stated that he had already completed surgery and would begin treatment for the next few months.

Tenorio's positive attitude is no surprise to those who know him well. Throughout his career, he has been known for his passion, steady leadership, and dedication to the game. His love for basketball is evident in his accomplishments, which include winning eight championships, four Finals MVP awards, and being selected to the All-Star team ten times.

But Tenorio admits that his basketball success can be attributed to his former teammate, Olsen Racela. Their relationship began during their college days with the Ateneo Blue Eagles, but it wasn't until Tenorio turned pro that their connection blossomed. As teammates on the San Miguel Beermen in 2006, Tenorio saw Racela as a mentor and took advantage of the opportunity to learn from a great basketball mind.

"All the things he absorbed from Racela back then, Tenorio still applies to this very day," said Tenorio on an episode of The Drop In.

Racela not only provided Tenorio with valuable basketball advice but also taught him how to choose his game-day shoes. "Since nag-start ako in the PBA, ito natutunan ko kay Coach Olsen and Coach Jeff [Cariaso]: 'Pag dark uniform kami, white shoes ako. 'Pag naka-white uniform kami, dark shoes ako. Contrast ako, ever since until now," shared Tenorio.

Tenorio always has two colorways of a particular shoe, alternating between light and dark shades depending on the team's uniform. He admits that it's one of his superstitions before every game and checks the schedule to ensure he doesn't make a mistake.

Whether it's the shoes or how he handles himself on the court, Tenorio is grateful for the impact Olsen Racela has had in his life. And up until today, he maintains a tight connection with his mentor, who is currently on the Ginebra coaching staff.

"Siya yung pinakamalaking influence sa 'kin sa basketball. Until now, hindi kami natitigil na constant na usapan namin regarding sa basketball, sa buhay at sa pamilya," he shared.

Tenorio's positive attitude and determination are a testament to his strength and character. He is a fighter on and off the court, and his "Iron Man" streak of 744 consecutive games played - the longest in PBA history - is a testament to his resilience and perseverance.

While the news of his diagnosis may be a setback, Tenorio remains focused on his recovery and returning to the game. He has assured his fans that he will be back for "Iron Man 2" and that he will continue to fight for his team, his family, and his love for basketball.

The PBA community has rallied around Tenorio, sending messages of support and encouragement. And while the future may be uncertain, one thing is for sure: LA Tenorio's fighting spirit and love for the game will continue to inspire players and fans alike.
