Converge fans were taken aback when their beloved team signed wingman Kevin Racal to a new two-year contract on Tuesday, further solidifying their campaign in Season 48 of the PBA. The renewal was signed in the presence of head coach Aldin Ayo, team manager Jacob Lao, assistant team manager CK Kanapi, and Racal's representative Danny Espiritu.
The signing of Racal came just a few days after the FiberXers traded big men Abu Tratter and Dave Murrell to Magnolia for Adrian Wong and a first-round pick in the upcoming draft. Racal, who played for Ayo in college at Letran, has a known long-standing association with the coach, as they won an NCAA men's championship together in 2015.
The 31-year-old Racal was one of the former Alaska players that Converge acquired when they obtained the franchise of the Aces lock, stock, and barrel. He and the FiberXers played one conference under former coach Jeff Cariaso before Ayo took over starting in the Commissioner's Cup.
With Racal's versatile skills on both ends of the floor, his re-signing is expected to bolster Converge's roster as they aim to make a deep run in the upcoming PBA season. It remains to be seen how Racal will be utilized by Ayo in the new campaign, but his familiarity with the coach's system could prove to be an advantage for the team.
It is understandable that Racal is hated by the fans of his team because his numbers are really not that good. He never scored more than 8 points per game in a tournament.
The advance stats shows though that he has been very good in his first few seasons in the league. The very first season that he ended up with a negative net rating was 2021-2022.
Unfortunately, he only posted a positive net rating in the Governors' Cup in this 2023 season. I think, his game is on a down trend and the hate of the fans has a valid foundation.
