Dear Gilas Pilipinas,
I am writing to you today with a heavy heart, saddened by the news of your recent loss to Cambodia in the Southeast Asian Games. This defeat is the worst that the program has suffered in the history of the regional meet, and it is difficult to come to terms with.
As you know, the Philippines has only experienced a handful of losses in the SEA Games, with some of the most memorable ones dating back to as early as 1977. However, in recent times, our neighbors have been catching up with us, and the competition has become much tougher.
It is disheartening to see that other countries are resorting to any means necessary to compete with us, as evidenced by Cambodia fielding multiple naturalized players for the tournament. These players were instrumental in securing the win for the hosts, and it is a shame that we were unable to overcome them.
I know that Manny V. Pangilinan, the president of Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, has expressed his disappointment in the downfall of the program. We all share his sentiments and hope that this loss will serve as a wake-up call for us to work harder and strive for excellence.
Knowing that the guy that is shelling out money for our national team because of his love for basketball is so devastated is heartbreaking.
Because it means that the problem is so big now that even him, he cannot understand it.
With a few months to go before the FIBA World Cup, can Gilas still recover?
I think they can. But I do not think coach Chot Reyes is the one that can lead us to the best recovery possible. He failed.
Deschon Winston and JP Erram were waiting for a call. They never got it and both these guys deserved to be part of the Final 12 for this SEA Games!
If Gilas will fail to get back the Gold, it means coach Chot Reyes has failed twice in the SEA Games. A level-headed decision-maker can easily digest that a guy who led our country to be totally dethroned in the SEA Games is not the right guy to lead us in the grandest battle of them all.
Yes. It is already late. But I still believe that a guy like coach Tab Baldwin trying to save the 2023 FIBA World Cup campaign of the Philippines is the better choice than continue to shove coach Chot Reyes to the basketball heart of Filipinos.
