PBA Free Agency: Is Ginebra NOT an option for Maverick Ahanmisi?

The future of Maverick Ahanmisi hangs in the balance as negotiations with Converge management remain at a standstill, leading to the expiration of his one-year contract with the FiberXers on Tuesday (June 6) unless a miraculous breakthrough occurs. Should no last-minute agreement be reached, Ahanmisi, the former No. 3 overall pick from the Class of 2015, will become the first in his draft class to enter unrestricted free agency by Wednesday, granting him the freedom to choose his next team without restrictions from his current club.

The impasse in negotiations arose due to the failure of both parties to reach a consensus regarding the value and duration of the contract. Sources have indicated that the FiberXers offered a short-term deal, while Ahanmisi's camp desired a longer commitment. Although discussions have yet to resume since Monday, it has been disclosed by a knowledgeable source that Converge management has already withdrawn its previous offer.

Ahanmisi joined the FiberXers as a late signee last year, returning from the United States a few days into Season 47 after agreeing to a one-year contract. Throughout the season, he established himself as one of the key contributors for the team, emerging as their leading local scorer in the Governors' Cup and solidifying his status as a prominent figure in this off-season's free agency market.

All the other eleven squads are possibilities but the leading destination for the 31-year-old guard appears to be the SMC group, particularly due to the presence of his younger brother Jerrick in Magnolia, where he recently signed a two-year extension. While Ahanmisi has also received a lucrative offer to play overseas, specifically in a Middle Eastern country, he expresses a desire to explore the opportunities available to him as an unrestricted free agent in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).

What is very interesting is the silence in the rumor mill for Ginebra. According to the coaching staff recently, they just want to keep the core.

Can they not consider trying to lure Maverick knowing that they do not need to give up anything?
