Coach Tim Cone has expressed his priority of keeping the core of Barangay Ginebra intact for the upcoming PBA Season 48. Despite parading a new-look roster for the PBA On Tour, Cone confirmed that key players, including reigning MVP Scottie Thompson and Governors' Cup Best Player of the Conference Christian Standhardinger, will be returning for another season together.
Cone emphasized the team's commitment to moving forward with the same core intact, with only Jamie Malonzo having an expiring contract among the core players. As the Kings played their first preseason game against the San Miguel Beermen, Cone entrusted coaching duties to chief deputy Richard Del Rosario.
In the official lineup submitted for the PBA On Tour, Thompson, Malonzo, and Japeth Aguilar were left out, while Standhardinger and Stanley Pringle were included but did not see action against San Miguel. The starting unit comprised only sophomore Jeremiah Gray and John Pinto from Cone's regular rotation, supplemented by players from Ginebra's 3x3 team.
Although players from the 3x3 team are also being considered, Cone emphasized that the immediate focus is on bringing back all the integral players who contributed to the team's back-to-back finals appearances and championship victory in the mid-season Commissioner's Cup last season. Cone expressed satisfaction with the team's progress and highlighted the growth potential of players like Jamie and Miah, along with Christian's impressive performance in the previous conference.
The goal for Barangay Ginebra is to maintain continuity and build upon the team's success as they prepare for the upcoming season.
I really wonder if Ginebra is making the right decision here. Japeth Aguilar's health is very shaky now. LA Tenorio may not return too.
