Gilas Analysis: The only way for Gilas to enter the next round!

Gilas Pilipinas encountered a disappointing setback with an 80-70 loss to Angola, relinquishing an 11-point lead and marking their second defeat in the 2023 Fiba Basketball World Cup.

Despite the challenging circumstances, a ray of hope remains for Gilas Pilipinas.

Remarkably, the team is still in contention for the second round despite slipping to a 0-2 record in Group A. There's a glimmer of possibility that they could tie for second place with Italy and Angola, all at 1-2.

For those unfamiliar, a crucial Fiba rule pertaining to tiebreakers is outlined in Appendix D.1.3. In the case of matching win-loss records among multiple teams, the game outcomes between those teams take precedence for classification. If these outcomes are also equal, further criteria are applied in sequence:

1. Higher game points difference of the games between them.

2. Higher number of game points scored in the games between them.

3. Higher game points difference of all games in the group.

4. Higher number of game points scored in all games in the group.

Challenges lie ahead for Gilas, with a formidable match against the 10th-ranked Italy approaching. Even a victory may not guarantee their progression.

Potential scenarios must align for Gilas to secure a place in the next round. The first game of a Tuesday doubleheader is critical, as Angola's loss to the Dominican Republic would boost Gilas's chances. This is because win-loss records from the initial round carry forward.

In the event of an Angola loss, Gilas would not only need to beat Italy but also achieve a specific point difference to advance.

Currently, the point difference of the three vying teams are as follows:
+14 Italy
-4 Angola
-10 Pilipinas

If Dominican Republic wins their game against Angola, Pilipinas will need to win by 13 at leaast. That way, the point difference of the three teams will be:
+1 Italy
-5 (at least) Angola
+3 Pilipinas
