2023 PBA Draft GRADES! Rain or Shine dominated?

This draft is not only the deepest because it has the most numbers of applicants but in terms of quality, this also has a shot!

So, here is our real time initial grades for the picks that were made!

Let me explain how we will grade!
A to F with A as the highest and F as the lowest. D is the middle ground. I grade them according to the quality of the decision and not solely looking at the player. That means drafting the expected guy will just result to D. Also, we will consider the risk of them departing to another International League.

ROUND 1

#1. Terrafirma Dyip - Stephen Holt
He is 31 years old. But he can also be a top 5 player right away. The guy is superb on both ends of the court and that can make him the main guy of a championship team. With his age, I think the risk that he will leave for another league is not that high. But the question is, can Terrafirma pay him or will they sell him right away?
Grade: C

#2. Blackwater Elite - Christian David
He is super athletic and was very interesting because he is a legit 6'6 who plays in the wing position. If his shooting become stable and he become less reliant on his athleticism, he could be something. But, he has a very bad injury history and I think the risk is high that he will leave the PBA for another league in less than 3 years.
Grade: D

#3. Rain or Shine Elasto Painters - Luis Villegas
I am the biggest fan of Villegas. I am a believer of modern basketball and he is a legit 3-and-D type of center. He is perfect for coach Yeng Guiao and I think he is the type of professional basketball player that is willing to stay with an independent team.
Grade: B

#4. Rain or Shine Elasto Painters - Keith Datu
What a draft by Rain or Shine! I did not anticipate them to do it but they did! Drafting the top 2 center prospects in the draft is easily an AAA! Datu is as interesting as Villegas. He is more athletic and also a wing player in the state.
Grade: A

#5. Northport Batang Pier - Zavier Lucero
Northport was looking for a center but Rain or Shine grabbed them first. So, Lucero is a fine pick here. Although, they will need to wait for him.
Grade: C

#6. Phoenix Super LPG - Ken Tuffin
I am a fan of the fit. Tuffin has a solid shooting stroke and is anointed as the best shooter in this draft. Phoenix love shooting and forward. So, Ken could be perfect with them.
Grade: B

#7. NLEX Road Warriors - Richard Rodger
The pedigree is there. He can be actually there starting point guard if he fits well with Kevin Alas. He will be big for a point guard. Although, I think there is a big risk of him leaving for International league.
Grade: C

#8. Meralco Bolts - Brandon Bates
The best giant center available. Meralco is in need of one. Coach Nenad may have a connection with him. With Hugnatan still there, the development could be smooth.
Grade: B

#9. Converge Fiber Xers - Schonny Winston
This is easily the easiest pick to grade. Schonny is a #1 pick candidate. And for Converge to get him here is a blessing that Converge should not pass on!
Grade: A

#10 Converge Fiber Xers - BJ Andrade
We have been consistent in our mock draft that Converge will draft BJ. Although, he is currently injured. He could be as good as Tyler Tio. But, with Winston there, I question there decision here.
Grade: E

#11 Northport Batang Pier - Cade Flores
A hardworking forward that can carve his way on both ends. Northport fails to get the center that they need and they decided to go with an undersize big in Cade. Not the best outcome for Northport but the decision is fine.
Grade: C

#12 Terrafirma Dyip - Taylor Miller
Terrafirma went for the best player available. Miller was an above-average player in Division 2 NCAA. Knowing that he came to the draft without that much intel, I think there is a high chance that he will look to leave for an International league early.
Grade: C

ROUND 1
#13 Terrafirma Dyip - Kenmark Carino
This is an easy pick. Terrafirma needs a center and for them to get a giant who is developing his skills at this point of the draft is a good decision.
Grade: C

#14 Converge Fiber Xers - Bryan Santos
Here is a Pampanga pick. I thought Louie Sangalang is actually the best Pampanga player available at this point.
Grade: E

#15 Rain or Shine Elasto Painters - Henry Galinato
Rain or Shine is killing this draft. Coach Yeng Guiao knows that big center is the most important players in the PBA! Drafting the best available at this point is again an excellent choice!
Grade: A

#16 Phoenix Super LPG - Raffy Verano

We all know that Ateneo is so deep that even players that only played off-the-bench can end up being quality player. Raffy is versatile but I wonder if he is athletic enough to be a long-term player.
Grade: E

#17 Phoenix Super LPG - Ricci Rivero
His face when he was called was obviously disappointed. Nevertheless, he was a blue-chip prospect a few years ago and I think the potential is still really high.
Grade: B

#18 NLEX Road Warriors - Enoch Valdez
A very interesting player. He is rugged, strong and physical. He is young at 23. So, NLEX can be patient with him.
Grade: C

#19 Converge Fiber Xers - John Louisse Delos Santos
Converge continue to go for players that impressed him in the workouts. He is not a shooter and that is a big red flag for a point guard.
Grade: E

#20 Blackwater Elite - James Canlas Kwekuteye
As expected, one hyped Fil-Foreign player will fall as teams will become worried about the maximum Fil-Foreign player that is allowed to be signed in a team. Canlas is a legit first-rounder and getting him here is a big steal. That means this decision is easy.
Grade: C

#21 NLEX Road Warriors - Jhan Nermal
Quite old for NLEX to grab at this point. There are still a lot of good names available. So, this is not that good of a reach in my eyes.
Grade: F

#22 Terrafirma Dyip - Louie Sangalang
Terrafirma is going with the logical choice here. He is undersize for a bigman but he is rugged enough to potentially have a Brondial-type of career.
Grade: C

#23 Barangay Ginebra San Miguel - Ralph Cu

Instead of Kim Aurin, Ginebra went with their other 3x3 player in Cu. He is a wingman and his passing vision is quite interesting for a 6'4.
Grade: B

#24 Rain or Shine Elasto Painters - Adrian Nocum
A hardworking shooting guard. After drafting three bigs, going for a guard here is logical. Although, Fran Yu is still there.
Grade: E

Round 3

#25 Terrafirma Dyip - JB Bahio
An undersize bigman but skilled and hardworking enough that he could be able to find role in the PBA!
Grade: B

#26 Blackwater Elite - Clifford Jopia
Blackwater made sure that they will get the guy of TNT. Jopia is the tallest player available at this point.
Grade: B

#27 Rain or Shine Elasto Painters - Sherwin Concepcion

An easy pick. Sherwin is one of the recognizable names that are still available. Let us see if he can find minutes in rain or Shine.
Grade: C

#28 Phoenix Super LPG - Matthew Daves

He failed to find consistent minutes in Ateneo but a lot of people are actually excited about him.
Grade: C

#29 Northport Batang Pier - Brent Paraiso
Paraiso before Fran Yu? I wonder what Northport is doing here. Paraiso is a fine pick here but they need Yu more.
Grade: E

#30 NLEX Road Warriors - Dominic Fajardo
As expected, teams will try to retain their players in the PBA on Tour. Fajardo played well during the preseason tournament.
Grade: D

#31 Converge Fiber Xers - Inand Fornillos
A pick made through the connection of their team manager to Ateneo. With more popular names still there, I am not a fan.
Grade: F

#32 Meralco Bolts - Jolo Mendoza
The guy that played well with Converge in the PBA on Tours. He is a scorer and any bench could need that.
Grade: A

#33 TNT Tropang Giga - PASS
They could have gotten a young player here to try out.
Grade: F

#34 Magnolia Hotshots - Patrick Maagdenberg
A big player and Magnolia needs one.
Grade: C

#35 Barangay Ginebra San Miguel - Kim Aurin
Ginebra will retain their other 3x3 player in Aurin. Kim has that Ginebra aura. He can score pretty swell.
Grade: C

#36 San Miguel Beermen - Troy Mallillin
This guy is interesting. He was a blue-chip prospect entering the UAAP senior division but failed to live up to his potential. Maybe, he can find that here in the PBA!
Grade: A
