Blackwater team owner Dioceldo Sy is facing a sudden dilemma. Initially, he offered Marc Pingris a role as a big man's coach, but after discussions with Pingris and Blackwater coach Jeff Cariaso, he's considering the possibility of adding the PBA great to the Bossing's roster for the upcoming 48th season.
The idea of a PBA comeback for the 41-year-old Pingris emerged during their conversation. Pingris, a nine-time PBA champion and 15-time All-Star, spent most of his career with San Miguel Corporation (SMC) teams, particularly Purefoods and San Miguel Beer. He achieved great success with B-Meg/Purefoods/Star and was part of their rare grand slam in 2014 under coach Tim Cone.
Pingris retired from the PBA in 2021 due to a recurring back injury but has been playing for Imus in the MPBL and appears to be in excellent condition. He expressed his willingness to condition himself for a month if he were to join a PBA lineup.
The new PBA season is scheduled to start on November 5, providing Pingris with sufficient time to get back in shape if he decides to make a comeback. Coach Cariaso suggested the idea of bringing Pingris in as a big man's coach, especially considering Blackwater's young big men like Ato Ular and rookies Christian David and Clifford Jopia.
Do you think Marc should return?
After the biggest draft ever, I am not sure fans are really happy to see legends who are already 40+ years old and who are clearly not a positive contributor already in the court, get opportunities to take up roster spots.
