San Miguel has chosen a new import for the upcoming PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
Tyler Stone, a well-traveled player with international experience, will be joining the PBA's most successful team when the season-opening tournament begins on November 5. Team manager Gee Abanilla has confirmed Stone's signing. The 32-year-old Stone, standing at 6 feet 8 inches tall, is expected to arrive in the Philippines shortly.
Stone, a product of Missouri and Southeast Missouri State, boasts an extensive basketball career overseas, having played in various countries, including Turkey, Greece, Russia, Italy, Israel, Puerto Rico, France, and Japan. His most recent stint was with Rapid Bucuresti in Romania, where he received several accolades, including Import Player of the Year (2023), All-Romanian League Player of the Year, and Forward of the Year.
Basketball runs in the Stone family, as Tyler's father, Bradley, also played the game and competed for the University of Memphis in college before being drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in the 1979 NBA draft.
Tyler Stone will take on the task of leading the San Miguel Beermen in the upcoming Commissioner’s Cup, as they aim to build on their semifinals appearance in the previous season's edition of the import-laden tournament, where they were reinforced by Diamond Stone and Devon Scott. The Beermen's most recent Commissioner’s Cup championship came in 2019, led by Chris McCullough, when they defeated TNT in the finals, with McCullough playing a pivotal role.
I wonder though if choosing an offensive-heavy import with questionable defense is the right decision for San Miguel.
