Do players have the right to demand compensation before representing the national team?
This issue is often considered a sensitive topic, with many fans and players viewing any monetary requests before joining Gilas Pilipinas as inappropriate. Former Gilas emotional leader Marc Pingris firmly believes that players should not expect payment for their national team duties.
On the other hand, Jayjay Helterbrand presents an alternate perspective, slightly leaning towards the players' stance. According to the former national team member, it might be acceptable for players to ask for compensation as long as they are aware of their value.
"The times have changed. Let's not judge. It's what everyone does now. You have the right to do that. It's unfair for some to get paid while others don't, right?" Helterbrand stated in a recent video uploaded on the PBA Motoclub YouTube channel.
The Barangay Ginebra San Miguel legend also highlights the vulnerability of players. "What if you get injured while playing for the national team? When you negotiate with the PBA, they might say, 'But you were injured.' So, this is all we can give you."
However, Helterbrand criticizes the player who asked for an exorbitant amount after being selected for the Gilas pool. "For me, it's different if you're asking for an unreasonable amount just because you don't want to play. If they say no, it's okay for you because you don't want to play, but if they say yes, it's a plus for you. Maybe he didn't want to play," he explained.
Helterbrand emphasizes that players invited to join the national team should be transparent about their intentions. If they are unwilling to participate, they should express it openly.
Refusing to represent the national team, according to Helterbrand, should not immediately invite criticism from the community. There may be various reasons why a player opts not to participate, and that decision should be respected.
So, is the rumored decision of Mikey Williams, warranted?
