Experienced playmaker Alex Cabagnot has transitioned into the status of an unrestricted free agent following Terrafirma's decision to place him on the free agency list at the commencement of Season 48 of the PBA. As an unrestricted free agent, the 6-foot guard, who is set to turn 41 in December, possesses the liberty to join any team without necessitating a trade from his potential future franchise.
Despite the development, Cabagnot remains under contract with the Dyip until December, as confirmed by his representative Danny Espiritu, who revealed the increased interest from multiple teams in securing the veteran's services. "Now that he's an unrestricted free agent, he is more open to talking with teams that are interested in him," mentioned Espiritu.
A notable omission from Terrafirma's official roster submitted to the PBA office, Cabagnot's absence marks the conclusion of his nearly two-year tenure with the Dyip following an unexpected trade from San Miguel in 2021, where Simon Enciso was sent in exchange. Unfortunately, his time with Terrafirma was marred by a significant setback as he suffered a torn Achilles tendon merely a month after joining the team, prematurely concluding his season. Despite the setback, Cabagnot received a fresh two-year contract from the franchise.
In the previous season, Cabagnot contributed in 20 games for the Dyip, averaging 8.0 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 4.9 assists, highlighting his enduring value to the team despite the challenges. His illustrious career journey, which began after being the No. 2 overall pick in the 2005 draft, truly took off when he joined San Miguel in 2010, a tenure during which he earned all nine of his championship titles.
Throughout his career, Cabagnot secured several individual accolades, including recognition as a one-time Mythical First Team member, two-time Mythical Second Team selection, a Finals MVP, All-Star Game MVP, eight-time All-Star, and once the recipient of the Comeback Player of the Year award.
I wonder what Alex is thinking right now. He was let go by the worst team of the league. He is already 40 years old. He was disaster last season with a net rating of negative 23.7.
I think, the only team that should give him a roster spot are those who are in need of a mentor to their young guards.
