PBA teams were aware that there are some draftees that need time before they can be activated due to prior commitments. MPBL players are one of them.
Kyt Jimenez might make his debut for San Miguel in the upcoming 2023-24 PBA Commissioner’s Cup, despite the ongoing MPBL. Following the elimination of Jimenez's team, Gen San, by the Batangas Embassy Chill in the MPBL South Division, the 5-foot-11 guard was granted release by the team. Subsequently, San Miguel signed him, allowing Jimenez to be available for the Beermen's season opener against NLEX at Ynares Center, Antipolo, this Wednesday. Jimenez, selected 76th overall in the 2023 PBA Draft, showcased his skills with an average of 6.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.4 steals for Gen San.
Similarly, another MPBL participant turned PBA draft pick, King Caralipio, will also step into professional league action. Caralipio, selected 42nd overall by Converge, had his MPBL stint cut short as Zamboanga was eliminated by Bacoor. The NCAA Season 98 Finals MVP had notable performances in the MPBL, averaging 7.5 points and 5.8 rebounds for Family’s Brand Sardines. Both players are set to bring their talents to the PBA after facing elimination in the MPBL, marking a new chapter in their basketball careers.
Now, are they worth it of a roster spot?
Both for me are questionable. For Converge, I do not see the point of adding another wing when that is already the position with the deepest rotation. Deschon Winston. Kevin Racal, Jerrick Balanza, Mike Nieto and Bryan Santos are part of that rotation already. I do not see a path for King to get minutes.
For Kyt, the same issue can be said. Actually, it could be worse than the situation of King. Unless San Miguel looks at him as a long-term project, I am leaning to believe that San Miguel was looking more at his popularity than his skillset.
