Since entering the PBA as an expansion team in 2014, the Blackwater Bossing have been yearning for a breakthrough campaign. Despite having nurtured young talents and breakout players like Ray Parks Jr., Poy Erram, Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser, Mac Belo, Carlo Lastimosa, and Brian Heruela, the team has faced challenges with players being swiftly traded. Notable figures such as Mo Tautuaa, Calvin Oftana, and Mikey Williams, who were high draft picks, were also part of these trades.
Competing in the PBA has been a struggle for the Bossing, evident in their five one-win conferences, including the last season's Governors' Cup. They are yet to progress beyond the quarterfinals. The team's revolving door of coaches has hindered the development of a consistent and winning culture.
However, according to Barangay Ginebra San Miguel coach Tim Cone, a change is on the horizon, and Blackwater could soon become a contender. Cone attributes this optimism to the leadership of Coach Jeff Cariaso.
"They're doing a great job of controlling the tempo, and I think that's number one. By controlling the tempo, he (Cariaso) can put up a really good defensive stand—we had trouble penetrating his defense—and they become an execution-type team," remarked Cone after narrowly escaping a game against the Bossing on Sunday.
Reflecting on the past, Cone drew parallels with the Alaska Milkmen's dynasty of the 90s, where Cariaso played a pivotal role as a two-way player.
"If I may say, I don't want to insult Jeffrey, but (they're) kind of like the Alaska of the 90s. We were (about) execution and tempo and (we're a) culture-driven team," noted Cone.
Cone expressed that Cariaso, in his first conference with Blackwater, has the right pieces at his disposal, effectively organizing the team and maximizing each player's potential. He highlighted standout performances from players like RK Ilagan, Tyrus Hill, Troy Rosario, and Rey Suerte. As a seasoned coach, Cone's endorsement and fearless forecast for Blackwater's future carry weight in the league.
DO YOU AGREE?
I disagree. He knows how high is the needed accumulated talent for a team to contend. He gave his greenlight to get Jamie Malonzo and Jeremiah Gray last year even though they are already a defending champion. There is a good chance that Jamie Malonzo for RK, Tyrus, Troy and Rey is just a fair exchange.
So, I do not think Blackwater is really on its way of becoming a contender. Although, I also respect the ability of coach Jeff in molding a team who is capable of winning games.
