After Rain or Shine's disappointing 0-3 start in the 2023-24 PBA Commissioner’s Cup, head coach Yeng Guiao is contemplating significant changes to turn the team's fortunes around. The Elasto Painters are currently at the bottom of the standings alongside Converge after a narrow 99-98 loss to Phoenix. Guiao acknowledged the increasing difficulty of making a comeback and expressed the need for drastic measures, with discussions scheduled for Monday to explore potential solutions before their next game against reigning champion Barangay Ginebra on Friday.
One potential measure discussed by Guiao is the replacement of their import DaJuan Summers, but he emphasized that this alone might not be sufficient to reverse their situation. Summers, despite averaging 24.7 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.7 blocks in three games, struggled in the loss to the Fuel Masters, contributing only 15 points and shooting 3-of-13 from the field. Guiao acknowledged the pressure on imports to carry the team, and he plans to engage in further discussions with Summers to assess the urgency of the situation and the need for a prompt reaction.
Guiao noted that while Summers performed well in the preseason, he seemed to be outplayed by younger imports during the actual games. The coach expressed surprise at Summers being consistently outscored and outrebounded, considering his expected scoring and rebounding capabilities. Guiao mentioned the possibility of giving Summers one last attempt to rectify the situation but stressed the team's readiness to make significant decisions if needed.
Despite the challenging start, Guiao remains optimistic that Rain or Shine has the potential to rebound with the right adjustments and a few victories. He believes that redirecting the team's focus, making necessary decisions, and securing a few wins could bring them back into contention. The veteran coach emphasized the importance of winning their first game and being open to major decisions during upcoming meetings to address the team's current predicament.
With this type of discussion, I wonder if Rain or Shine will realize that they have a former face of the PBA in their roster and there is a 95% chance that they can exchange him for a winning package.
Is it time for Rain or Shine to let go of James Yap?
