PBA Controversy: EASL wants Ginebra and SMB to participate in the future!

The East Asia Super League (EASL) is entering its second season, and franchise popularity is a hot topic. While acknowledging the competitive struggles of PBA teams in the inaugural season, EASL CEO Henry Kerins has his eyes set on a specific prize: Barangay Ginebra.

Kerins readily admits the PBA's one-import format puts them at a disadvantage compared to leagues with two import slots. However, his optimism shines through – he believes PBA teams will eventually adjust to the EASL's format. Injuries also played a part in the lackluster performance last season, according to Kerins. With a healthy Ginebra or San Miguel squad, he envisions a different outcome entirely.

The reason for this Ginebra obsession? Let's be honest, it's about eyeballs. Kerins himself calls them the "most mature franchise" with the "biggest following." A packed house with passionate Ginebra fans cheering on their heroes against a top Asian team? That's a recipe for ratings gold and a massive boost for the EASL's profile.

Kerins acknowledges the logistical hurdles. The PBA's three-conference format and single-import rule clash with the EASL's structure. He's committed to working with the PBA to find solutions,  emphasizing fairness for all teams. The ideal scenario, as he sees it, is for PBA teams to have the same opportunity to integrate two imports and build team chemistry throughout the season, just like their counterparts in other leagues.

The focus on Ginebra isn't a slight on the other PBA teams. Kerins highlights the overall improvement in the PBA, with independent teams putting on a good show. But from a pure fan engagement perspective, a Ginebra-New Taipei Kings matchup would be a spectacle, generating a buzz that transcends borders.

Ultimately, Kerins sees the EASL as a catalyst for growth, both for the league itself and the participating teams. Stronger competition elevates domestic leagues, while fostering new connections between players and fans across Asia. The path forward involves collaboration and adjustments – the EASL wants to ensure a level playing field while Ginebra's star power offers a golden opportunity to shine a spotlight on the entire league. It's a win-win situation in the making, with a healthy dose of Filipino basketball fandom at its core.
