PBA Controversy: Magnolia is a BIG JOKE now?

In a shocking turn of events, the Magnolia Hotshots stumbled into the record books with an abysmal 51-point performance against the Meralco Bolts in the PBA. Yes, you read that right: 51 points. It’s a scoreline that will haunt the Hotshots for years to come, etching their name in the annals of PBA history as the team that hit rock bottom offensively.

When your offense is colder than a scoop of ube ice cream, it’s hard to justify being called the “Hotshots.” Perhaps they should consider a rebrand to the “Cold Cuts” or the “Frozen Fiascos.”

The Hotshots’ starting lineup resembled a misfiring cannon. Not a single player managed to score in double figures. Mark Barroca, a fan favorite, went an abysmal 1-of-9 from the field. The rest of the starters—James Laput, Aris Dioniso, Jerrick Balanza, and Russell Escoto—were equally ineffective, combining for just 5 made field goals out of 23 attempts. It’s as if they stared at the sun too long without protective eyeglasses during the eclipse.

But let’s address the elephant in the room: the absence of Jio Jalalon and Calvin Abueva. Meralco coach Luigi Trillo pointed out that these two players were missing, implying that their absence was a significant blow to Magnolia. That is a lame excuse though. Those two players are not known scorers. Their absence shouldn’t have caused a catastrophic power outage on offense. After all, the Hotshots had a dozen other players suited up and ready to go.

The fans, however, aren’t mincing words. On social media, they’re calling for drastic measures. “Dapat itapon na ang Magnolia Pambansang Bano sa mosquito division,” one reader wrote. Another suggested the team switch to “playoffs mode” or consider early retirement from the PBA altogether.

The league, desperate to boost attendance, has been giving away free tickets. But games like this won’t fill the stands. Who wants to witness a team scoring a paltry 51 points? It’s time for the Hotshots to regroup, find their fire, and thaw out from this icy performance. Otherwise, they’ll remain forever frozen in PBA infamy
