The Terrafirma Dyip, once considered a perennial underdog, is now on the brink of entering the PBA playoffs after a long hiatus. But the burning question remains: Is Terrafirma no longer just a farm team?
In a tightly contested battle, the Dyip edged out the Northport Batang Pier, securing their fifth win of the season. This victory marked a significant milestone—the first time the franchise has won five games during the Johnedel Cardel era. But more importantly, it moved them within reach of their first playoffs appearance since the 2016 Governors’ Cup when they were still known as Mahindra. Back then, under coach Chris Gavina and with James White as an import, Terrafirma advanced to the quarterfinals—a feat they’ve been chasing ever since.
Stephen Holt, last year’s No. 1 overall rookie pick, played a pivotal role in Terrafirma’s recent win. With top scorer Juami Tiongson fouling out late in the match, Holt took matters into his own hands. In the final seconds, he drove inside for the game-winning basket, securing a hard-fought victory. Holt’s impressive all-around performance—22 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, and four steals—bolstered his bid for the Rookie of the Year award.
Terrafirma isn’t the only team experiencing a resurgence. Kelly Williams, a former MVP, has joined the ranks of players like Marc Barroca and Beau Belga, proving that age is just a number. Williams delivered a double-double—17 points and 13 rebounds—in TNT’s comeback win against the Phoenix Fuel Masters. This marks his second double-double this conference, showcasing his enduring impact on the court.
Meanwhile, the Phoenix Fuel Masters continue to rely on their three-point shooting. After a scorching performance against the NLEX Road Warriors, where they drained 17 three-pointers, they fired 10 first-half treys against TNT. However, their momentum waned, and they managed only two more three-pointers for the rest of the game. Overall, Phoenix’s 45 percent shooting from beyond the arc in their last two games highlights their strength in long-range shooting.
Is Terrafirma Shedding Its Farm Team Label?
While the Dyip’s playoff push is promising, the franchise’s identity remains a topic of debate. The lack of trades with SMC teams suggests a potential change of heart, but it’s not enough evidence. Terrafirma, as a company, may not see significant marketing gains from its PBA presence. As they fight for a playoff spot, the question lingers: Is Terrafirma finally shedding its farm team status and stepping into the spotlight? Only time—and more victories—will tell.
