PBA Trade Suggestion: Ginebra trade for Calvin Abueva!

In a game where he was a harmless participant, scoring just 4 points in 19 minutes while going 0-for-6 from the field, Calvin Abueva somehow made the headlines. For all the wrong reasons.

In the first quarter of Magnolia’s recent 87-77 loss to Barangay Ginebra in the PBA Philippine Cup, Abueva was captured flipping a middle finger on live TV, offending thousands of mortified viewers at home. It was a moment that encapsulated the mercurial forward’s tumultuous career—a blend of talent, controversy, and unpredictability.

But let’s set aside the off-court drama for a moment and focus on the hardwood. Abueva, when dialed in, is a force to be reckoned with. His relentless energy, defensive prowess, and ability to crash the boards make him a valuable asset for any team. However, his volatility has tested the patience of both fans and management.

Now, as the trade deadline looms, rumors swirl about a potential deal involving Abueva. The Magnolia Hotshots, despite their recent struggles, remain in contention for a playoff spot. But they need a shake-up, a bold move that could rejuvenate their roster and propel them toward championship aspirations.

Enter the proposed trade:

Ginebra Receives: Calvin Abueva
Northport Receives: 2024 1st-round pick from Magnolia, Jeremiah Gray, Sidney Onwubere (from Ginebra)
Magnolia Receives: Arvin Tolentino

The Gin Kings have been searching for an additional spark off the bench. Abueva’s tenacity and versatility could provide that boost. His defensive intensity would complement their star-studded lineup, and his ability to create chaos on the court might be just what they need during crucial moments. Plus, Ginebra fans love a player with an edge—someone who can ignite the crowd and energize the team.

We know that Northport is playing well right now. But if Ginebra and Magnolia get desperate to make changes, this trade can happen. We tried to give the best package realistically possible for Northport. THey will get a 1st round pick. An injured but still with a very high potential, Jeremiah Gray, and a playable Sidney Onwubere.

Arvin Tolentino is the missing piece. His scoring ability, especially from beyond the arc, addresses the Hotshots’ offensive woes. Pairing him with Paul Lee and Ian Sangalang creates a formidable trio. Yes, they part ways with Abueva, but his erratic behavior has become a distraction. Tolentino brings stability and a fresh perspective. The 2024 1st-round pick is a reasonable price to pay for a player who fits their system seamlessly.
