Converge coach Aldin Ayo isn't shy about voicing his desires. With the top overall pick in the upcoming PBA draft seemingly locked in, he rattled off a list of potential franchise changers. Let's be real, though, this wishlist is more "dream team" than a realistic expectation.
Ayo, ever the strategist, craves another big man to complement Justin Arana. His first choice? Kai Sotto, the towering 7-footer. But here's the thing: Sotto seems happy and productive in Japan. The chances of him declaring for the PBA draft are slim.
A more realistic option might be Justine Baltazar, the reigning MPBL MVP and a Pampanga native with ties to Converge co-owner Dennis Pineda. Still, Baltazar is excelling in the MPBL, and the allure of the PBA might not be strong enough to pull him away just yet.
Carl Tamayo's return from the Japanese B.League has PBA teams scrambling. Ayo is no exception. The talented forward is already part of the Gilas Pilipinas pool, showcasing his potential on the national stage. While Tamayo is a fantastic player, Converge might have to fight tooth and nail (and maybe offer a Godfather-like deal) to secure him with the top pick.
Rounding out Ayo's wishlist is the reigning UAAP MVP, Kevin Quiambao. The 6-foot-7 forward is another gem, but there's a catch: he's committed to leading De La Salle in their championship defense this coming season. So, while Quiambao is a fantastic player, Converge will have to wait a year before even considering him as a draft option.
Let's face it, Ayo's wishlist is a coach's dream. Landing any of these players would be a massive coup for Converge. But with established careers going strong elsewhere and draft commitments on the horizon, the reality might be a bit different. Still, it's fun to dream big, and Ayo's list shows his ambition for building a championship contender in Converge. The PBA draft is always full of surprises, so who knows? Maybe the basketball gods will shine on Converge and grant them one of their top wishes.
