2024 PBA Awards: First Mythical Team!

The mythical team award represents the best five players that played during a season through the lens of the currently accepted basketball positions.

Of course, a decade ago, we are talking about a Center, two Guards and two Forwards. Those days are gone. For me, the modern positions now are point guard, center, wingman and forward. Thus, for this mythical team, I just need to have a representative for each position.

We can also consider these five as the candidates for the MOST VALUABLE PLAYER Award.

Center - Junemar Fajardo
The easiest position to decide upon is the center position. Standhardinger is of course a great challenger for this one but I think he deserves the last spot for this mythical team. So, I do not need to think hard. Fajardo averaged 17.8 points, 56% FG, 13.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.7 blocks per game this season.

Forward - Calvin Oftana
I understand that the TNT struggled this season. But, that should not discount the breakout season of Calvin. Calvin manufactured 21.8 points, 48% FG, 40% 3FG, 8.0 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. He is easily one of the most modern players in the league today.

Wingman - Chris Newsome
Meralco Bolts won a championship. They won the Philippine Cup. They defeated Ginebra and SMB to get the crown. Chris led them. So, Chris should be here.

Point Guard - CJ Perez
I think the number of fans of CJ in the last few weeks decreased due to his below-average performance in the finals. Chris Newsome has a lot to say about that because Chris was the one who shut him down. Overall though, CJ was the BPC in the Commissioner's Cup and undoubtedly one of the most capable point guard in the league.

Center - Christian Standhardinger
Just like TNT, Ginebra was also a disappointment this year. They failed to enter the finals. Injuries is one of the biggest reason and that also created a bigger responsibility for Christian. Christian did his job, producing 19.2 points, 10.2 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 51% FG per game.
