Gilas Controversy: Ginebra coach Tim Cone is always right?

Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tim Cone's decision to enter the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT) with only 11 players instead of the full 12-man roster raises serious concerns. While Cone emphasizes a tight rotation and downplays the need for additional bodies, this strategy carries significant risks that could jeopardize the team's Olympic dream.

Let's be clear: injuries are a brutal reality in basketball.  Thompson's absence due to a bulging disc serves as a stark reminder. With just 11 players, another injury would severely limit Coach Cone's options.  Depth, even for a coach who prefers a shorter rotation, becomes crucial in a high-pressure tournament like the OQT. A single injury could force players into extended minutes, leading to fatigue and increased susceptibility to further injuries.

Cone argues that having 12 players is primarily for practice purposes. However, practice scenarios cannot replicate the intensity and physicality of a real game. Having an extra player, even if not a regular starter, provides valuable insurance and allows for strategic adjustments during the competition. It's a safety net that Coach Cone seems willing to forgo.

This decision raises a troubling question: is Coach Cone prioritizing his preferred playing style over maximizing Gilas' chances of success?  Isn't the ultimate goal to win the OQT and qualify for the Olympics?  Sacrificing depth for a rigid rotation seems like a gamble with potentially disastrous consequences.

Furthermore, Cone's approach seems almost self-inflicted.  He mentions not naming a full 12-man pool initially, a decision that could have prevented this very situation.  Wouldn't it have been better to have a wider selection from the beginning, allowing for flexibility in case of injuries?

Ultimately, Coach Cone's gamble with a depleted roster is a risky strategy. While his preference for a tight rotation is understandable, it needs to be balanced with the harsh realities of international competition.  The absence of a single additional player could have a devastating impact on Gilas' Olympic aspirations.  Hopefully, Cone's faith in his core group is enough, but Filipino basketball fans deserve a team that enters the OQT with every advantage at its disposal, not one taking unnecessary risks.
