Most Valuable Player award is the pinnacle award in professional basketball. Let us be realistic about this and state that there is no definite definition of the award.
Some will say that the MVP should be given to the player that produce the most during a season. Some will say that the success of the team of the players should be added to the scale. Some will say that popularity may also have a part of it.
For us, we just want to focus on the name of the award. Who is the most valuable player at the end of the season? We want to have a balance of legacy and production in determining the right guy.
So, Junemar Fajardo is a clear candidate. He is still as dominant in terms of numbers. Efficiency is down but he still led SMB to a title.
Christian Standhardinger's numbers are monstrous. He is a center but he averaged 5.0 assists per game! That is insane!
But for us, the MVP should be Chris Newsome. We recognized the Philippine Cup as the most important tournament during a PBA season. Chris led Meralco to conquer it.
He was not only the leader on paper and on words. The guy delivered the most important shot to win the crown! That shot opened the door to our hope of an improving future for the league.
This is the reason why he is our MVP.
