PBA Controversy: Rain or Shine-Magnolia game 3 referee, DESERVED his suspension?

The PBA recently made decisive moves following the contentious Game 3 of the Governors’ Cup quarterfinals between Rain or Shine and Magnolia. Referee Rey Yante has been suspended for the rest of the conference for missing a crucial goaltending violation in the final seconds of the game. PBA

Deputy Commissioner Eric Castro admitted the oversight but acknowledged that mistakes are part of the sport. Meanwhile, Magnolia coach Chito Victolero is set to be fined for furiously confronting officials post-game after the 111-106 overtime loss.

Victolero's frustration stemmed from a missed goaltending call involving Jhonard Clarito on Zavier Lucero’s fastbreak layup. While no immediate call was made, the play was later reviewed, and the basket was counted, leading to a 106-all tie.

This triggered a chaotic sequence where Magnolia was forced to foul, Rain or Shine stretched their lead, and a turnover in Magnolia’s final possession sealed the Hotshots' fate.

The PBA's actions—suspending referees and penalizing coaches for misconduct—have set a strong precedent moving forward.

Fans will expect this level of accountability and strictness as the playoffs intensify. It signals that officiating errors and unsportsmanlike conduct won’t go unpunished, maintaining fairness and integrity in the games ahead.
