PBA Analysis: Stephen Curry of the PBA?

TNT Tropang Giga’s import Rondae Hollis-Jefferson sees a rare potential in Barangay Ginebra’s rookie guard Rhon Jhay “RJ” Abarrientos, likening him to Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry. Hollis-Jefferson’s admiration for Abarrientos started during their time together in the Korean Basketball League (KBL) in 2022.

Back then, Abarrientos quickly established himself as a rising star in Asia, bagging the KBL Rookie of the Year award with Ulsan Hyundai Mobis Phoebus. His scoring ability, long-range shooting, and flashy dribbling reminded Hollis-Jefferson of Curry’s playing style—dynamic, unpredictable, and capable of energizing a team.

Now in the PBA, Abarrientos is adding a fresh spark to Ginebra’s roster, particularly complementing Coach Tim Cone’s system with his creative style and youthful energy. His playmaking and on-court confidence have brought an upbeat tempo and a lively atmosphere to Ginebra, an asset that adds depth to the team’s chemistry. Hollis-Jefferson believes that this infusion of talent and style is positively impacting team morale and performance, with players seemingly more connected and motivated during games.

Despite these high expectations, Abarrientos still has much to prove in the PBA. While his talent is undeniable, consistently achieving success and performing in high-pressure moments will be key to fully embodying the “Asian Steph Curry” label. Hollis-Jefferson’s comparison is both a testament to Abarrientos’ promise and a challenge to reach the level of accomplishment and influence Curry has had in the NBA. Before he can earn this moniker in the PBA, Abarrientos must continue to evolve and prove that he can lead Ginebra in their championship pursuit.
