PBA Controversy: Ginebra is an easy opponent for TNT?

TNT Tropang Giga’s commanding 104-88 win over Barangay Ginebra in Game 1 of the PBA Governors’ Cup Finals showcased a strategic dismantling of Ginebra's strengths, particularly their three-point shooting. Known as one of the league’s best long-range shooting teams, Ginebra struggled to find their rhythm, making only 2 out of 21 three-point attempts—a stark drop from their usual 37.2 percent shooting from beyond the arc.

This poor shooting, combined with TNT's aggressive defense, allowed the Tropang Giga to dominate early, build momentum, and ultimately maintain control throughout the game.

Coach Tim Cone pointed out that TNT was “more locked in” and successfully disrupted Ginebra's game plan, especially by pushing Ginebra out of their comfort zone offensively. Cone, however, is optimistic that Ginebra can adjust and make a comeback in Game 2, a task that’s integral to their "never-say-die" mentality.

An interesting angle is whether TNT's style, with its defensive intensity and perimeter lockdowns, could serve as a persistent “nightmare” matchup for Ginebra. Alternatively, some speculate that Ginebra’s surprising Game 1 performance could be part of Cone’s long-term strategy, offering TNT a false sense of control—a potential “poisonous” victory. The upcoming games will reveal whether Cone has indeed set up TNT for a reversal or if TNT's tactics can consistently counter Ginebra's offensive core.
