Terrafirma Dyip players were surprised by the sudden departure of head coach Johnedel Cardel, who led the team for over six seasons. Team manager Ronald Tubid acknowledged the impact on the players, but emphasized it's part of the professional sports landscape.
Cardel's tenure with Terrafirma wasn't filled with victories, compiling a record of 30-113. However, he's credited with developing young talents like Juami Tiongson, Andreas Cahilig, and a handful of others. Cardel's departure follows a brief but promising playoff run in the previous Philippine Cup.
The coaching reins will be handed over to long-time assistant Raymond Tiongco, who will be assisted by Tubid and Raymond Gavieres. While the reason for the split remains undisclosed, Terrafirma has resumed practice and is looking to move forward.
A New Coach, But Still a Farm Team?
While Terrafirma has a new head coach, it doesn't necessarily signify a change in their overall strategy. The franchise has been known to prioritize player development, often acting as a farm system for other PBA teams. Despite the coaching change, fans remain hopeful that the team will show improvement in the coming season. It'll be interesting to see how Coach Tiongco manages the team and whether they can find a way to balance development with achieving better on-court results.
