2025 PBA Draft: Abando should join?

Rhenz Abando, one of the most electrifying players to emerge from the Philippine basketball scene in recent years, remains conspicuously absent from the action. After parting ways with Anyang KGC in the Korean Basketball League (KBL) last May, Abando has yet to sign a new deal, leaving fans and pundits puzzled about his next move.

The high-flyer from Santo Tomas, La Union, was reportedly fielding several offers from Japan’s B.League, other KBL teams, and even Europe. A surprising inquiry came from a team in the Dominican Republic, highlighting his international appeal. However, none of these negotiations materialized, leaving Abando without a team as the basketball season rolled on across Asia.

According to his agent Marvin Espiritu, the downtime has allowed Abando to recover fully from a back injury sustained in the KBL last December. While the idea of a midseason signing remains on the table, his extended absence has raised questions about his ability to secure a long-term contract overseas, especially given the increasingly competitive landscape for international players.

For all his talent and marketability, Abando’s struggles to find stability abroad may indicate that the time has come to seriously consider joining the PBA. The 26-year-old remains one of the most sought-after free agents in Philippine basketball, and entering the 2025 PBA Draft could provide him with the platform to rebuild his legacy.

Abando’s skillset, highlighted by his athleticism, shooting, and defensive versatility, would make him an instant game-changer for any PBA team. While his camp has been hesitant about committing to the league, citing the need for "the right circumstances," the PBA might offer a stability that has eluded him in his overseas ventures. Playing in his home country could also help him reconnect with his roots and regain the rhythm and confidence needed for a long and fruitful career.

For now, Abando’s camp appears to be taking a cautious approach, keeping all options open while ensuring the player is physically and mentally prepared for his next challenge. Whether he stays abroad or finally takes his talents to the PBA, one thing is clear: Abando’s next decision could shape the trajectory of his career for years to come.

The clock is ticking, and the 2025 PBA Draft might just be the opportunity he needs to re-establish himself as one of the top players in Philippine basketball.
