PBA Imports Highlights: SMB should not choose NBA veteran as their import?

The buzz around San Miguel possibly bringing back Quincy Miller as their Commissioner’s Cup import is heating up, especially after his recent outings in the East Asia Super League (EASL). However, despite his undeniable talent, fans are hesitant to fully embrace the idea, given Miller’s inconsistent showing in the ongoing international tournament.

Miller’s latest performance was a bright spot in San Miguel’s disappointing 101-85 loss to the Taoyuan Pilots, as he erupted for 32 points on an efficient 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc. It was a marked improvement from his disastrous first game in the EASL, where he managed only 8 points on 2-of-12 shooting in a loss to Suwon KT Sonicboom.

Yet, it’s hard to ignore Miller’s dominant stint with Converge during the 2022-23 Commissioner’s Cup, where he averaged eye-popping numbers: **30.0 points, 49% field goal shooting, 3.4 three-pointers made, 15.4 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 2.9 blocks per game.** These stats alone suggest that Miller, when utilized effectively, can be an absolute game-changer, especially when paired with June Mar Fajardo.

San Miguel’s coaching staff, including assistant coach Peter Martin, acknowledged Miller’s potential but stopped short of committing to him as their Commissioner’s Cup import. "Maybe, maybe not," Martin said when asked about the import situation, noting that the search for reinforcements is ongoing.

Miller’s versatility, rebounding, and ability to stretch the floor would complement Fajardo’s dominant low-post game, creating a lethal inside-outside dynamic. However, the Beermen are reportedly also considering other options, including their previous import Bennie Boatwright, who is recovering from Achilles surgery.

Fans remain skeptical, largely due to the emotional rollercoaster that has been Miller’s recent EASL campaign. While his scoring explosion against the Pilots reignited optimism, the shadow of his first-game debacle looms large.

San Miguel’s decision will likely boil down to weighing Miller’s proven capabilities against his occasional inconsistency. If they do commit to him, and he rediscovers his Converge form, the Beermen could be poised for another championship run. If not, the search for a perfect fit alongside Fajardo continues.

For now, all eyes remain on Miller and whether San Miguel’s gamble will pay off.
