PBA Trade Rumors: Magnolia, SMB or Ginebra, which team wants Mikey Williams?

Snow Badua’s recent statement that one of the three San Miguel Corporation (SMC) teams—San Miguel Beermen, Magnolia Chicken Timplados Hotshots, or Barangay Ginebra San Miguel—might be interested in acquiring TNT Tropang Giga star Mikey Williams has sparked plenty of speculation. Here’s a ranking of the three teams, based on their current roster needs and circumstances, that might make a play for Williams.

#3 Barangay Ginebra San Miguel

It seems unlikely that Barangay Ginebra, under head coach Tim Cone, would prioritize Mikey Williams. The team is already stacked with ball-dominant guards and versatile playmakers, including Rhenz Abarrientos, Paul Desiderio Holt, Scottie Thompson, and Jerrick Ahanmisi. Adding Williams might create redundancy rather than addressing any pressing need. Furthermore, Ginebra values team chemistry, and Williams’ on-ball style might disrupt their established rhythm.

#2 Magnolia Chicken Timplados Hotshots

Magnolia arguably has the most compelling reason to chase Mikey Williams. The team lacks a definitive go-to scorer, a gap that Williams could fill seamlessly with his elite offensive skills. However, Magnolia has historically been conservative in making bold moves for big names, preferring to develop its core rather than shake things up with blockbuster trades. While Williams could elevate Magnolia’s title chances, the likelihood of them pursuing him aggressively is moderate at best.

#1 San Miguel Beermen

San Miguel Beermen are the clear front-runners in this rumor. Their aging guard rotation—composed of Chris Ross, Marcio Lassiter, Jericho Cruz, and Simon Enciso—makes them an ideal destination for a star like Mikey Williams. Ross, who shares a strong friendship with Williams, could play a role in integrating him into the team. Furthermore, Williams’ scoring and playmaking would perfectly complement San Miguel’s franchise cornerstone, June Mar Fajardo, allowing the Beermen to maintain their championship pedigree. Among the SMC teams, San Miguel has both the need and the motivation to pursue this deal.
