University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons star JD Cagulangan is reportedly considering joining the 2025 PBA Draft instead of pursuing a career in the Korean Basketball League (KBL). South Korean basketball blogger @baekpd1983 recently shared that the Suwon KT Sonicboom, which had shown interest in signing Cagulangan as an Asian Quota Player, may need to shift focus as the guard appears likely to opt for the PBA.
“In the Korean basketball community, rumors are circulating that JD Cagulangan will participate in the PBA draft, not a contract with the KBL club,” the blogger wrote.
Cagulangan had a stellar 2024 UAAP season, averaging 11.8 points, 4.4 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 1.8 steals per game, showcasing his versatility on both ends of the court. More importantly, he played a key role in leading the Fighting Maroons to the UAAP Season 87 championship, defeating his former team, the De La Salle Green Archers, in a thrilling Game 3 of the finals.
Cagulangan’s skill set as a dynamic playmaker, reliable scorer, and tenacious defender makes him an ideal prospect for the PBA. At just 5’9”, his court vision and basketball IQ set him apart, as does his knack for performing in high-pressure situations—qualities that have drawn comparisons to other elite guards in the league.
Given his recent success and well-rounded game, Cagulangan has the potential to be a top-five pick in the 2025 draft. His combination of leadership, statistical contributions, and winning pedigree will likely make him one of the most sought-after prospects.
While the KBL presents lucrative financial opportunities and international exposure, the chance to play in the PBA, the premier professional league in the Philippines, may carry greater sentimental and career value for Cagulangan. Moreover, joining the PBA would allow him to compete against the country's top talents while maintaining his strong connection to the local basketball community.
If Cagulangan officially declares for the PBA Draft, teams will undoubtedly vie for his services. Meanwhile, should he decline the KBL offer, it is rumored that his Fighting Maroons teammate, Terrence Fortea, could become a target for the Suwon KT Sonicboom.
With his recent championship run and stellar UAAP campaign, JD Cagulangan has firmly established himself as one of the most promising talents in Philip
