San Miguel is set to showcase its third import in the ongoing PBA Commissioner’s Cup as they bring in 27-year-old Jabari Narcis for their rematch against Hong Kong’s Eastern Long Lions this Sunday at the Philsports Arena. Narcis replaces Torren Jones, who had a brief stint with the team.
The Beermen have not disclosed the specific reason for Jones’ replacement, but it may be linked to his recent injury in San Miguel’s East Asia Super League (EASL) game against Eastern. Jones suffered a bloodied nose after being elbowed by Chris McLaughlin just four minutes into the game.
Despite the injury, Jones returned in the second quarter and posted a solid performance of 19 points and 11 rebounds. However, his efforts were not enough to prevent a 71-62 loss to Eastern. This game marked only his second outing for San Miguel, following an impressive debut against Blackwater where he tallied 29 points and 16 rebounds in a dominant 115-102 victory.
Narcis, a 6-foot-9 forward-center from Tobago, Trinidad, is the latest addition to the Beermen’s lineup. Known for his three-point shooting ability and a solid physique, Narcis brings a different skill set to the team compared to his predecessor.
However, beyond his physical attributes and willingness to take shots from beyond the arc, there isn’t much to suggest that Narcis will significantly elevate San Miguel’s performance in the Commissioner’s Cup.
San Miguel fans should temper their expectations as Narcis steps in. While his size and shooting might provide some value, it’s hard to see him as a game-changing addition to the roster. Given the team’s track record of frequently adjusting imports to find the right fit, this move might just be another stepping stone.
San Miguel’s management has shown its willingness to shuffle players in pursuit of the perfect lineup, so fans should not be surprised if the search for the ideal import continues. For now, Jabari Narcis is the man in the spotlight, but the spotlight might not last long.
