NBA Pinoy Highlights: Detroit Pistons sign a Filipino!

Filipino-American forward Ron Harper Jr. is back in the NBA after signing a two-way contract with the Detroit Pistons on Sunday (Monday morning, Manila time).

The signing, first reported by Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, comes on the heels of Harper's standout performance in the NBA G-League. Playing for the Maine Celtics this season, Harper has averaged an impressive 14.1 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game.

To accommodate Harper, the Pistons released Daniss Jenkins, opening up a two-way roster spot for the 24-year-old.

Harper made his NBA debut in 2023 with the Toronto Raptors but was sidelined by a season-ending shoulder injury that ultimately led to his release. Determined to return, Harper worked his way back through the G-League, where his performances caught the attention of NBA scouts.

During the 2024 offseason, Harper also tried out for the Boston Celtics but was waived before the regular season began. His resilience and determination have now earned him another chance to prove himself in the NBA with Detroit.

The 6-foot-4 Harper, whose mother hails from Ilocos, joins a growing list of Filipino-American players making waves in the NBA. He becomes the third active Filipino-American in the league, alongside Jordan Clarkson of the Utah Jazz and Jalen Green of the Houston Rockets.

As the son of five-time NBA champion and Chicago Bulls legend Ron Harper Sr., Harper Jr. carries a basketball pedigree and a relentless drive to establish his own legacy.

With the Pistons in a rebuilding phase, Harper's versatility and scoring ability could make him a valuable asset. The two-way contract allows him to split time between the NBA and G-League, providing opportunities to develop his game further while contributing to Detroit's lineup.

For Filipino basketball fans, Harper's return to the NBA is another source of pride and inspiration. His journey is a testament to perseverance, and all eyes will be on him as he seizes this new opportunity with the Pistons.
