The Magnolia Hotshots have remained a competitive team in the PBA, but their struggles in recent tournaments indicate a need for change. While they have been a perennial playoff contender, they have consistently fallen short of championship glory. Their aging core—Mark Barroca, Calvin Abueva, Ian Sangalang, and Paul Lee—has been the heart and soul of the team for years. However, their prime years are fading, and Magnolia must look toward the future. Without an infusion of young talent, they risk becoming a team stuck in the middle: not bad enough to rebuild, but not strong enough to win titles.
If Magnolia wants to maintain its status as a contender while preparing for the next generation, they must be aggressive in the trade market. Here are three players they should seriously consider targeting.

There are strong rumors that San Miguel Beer is eyeing Kemark Cariño, but Magnolia should make a push to acquire him instead. Cariño is exactly the type of modern big man the Hotshots need—a mobile, defensive-minded center who can complement James Laput in the frontcourt. While Laput has shown promise as an interior presence, Cariño offers versatility on both ends of the floor. He can stretch the defense with his outside shooting while providing rim protection, something Magnolia lacks. If they can outmaneuver San Miguel and land him, Cariño could be a valuable long-term piece for the franchise.
#2 Tyler Tio
If Magnolia is looking for a young, marketable face of the franchise, Tyler Tio is a perfect candidate. Tio has been thriving with Phoenix, showcasing his ability as a playmaker and shooter. His composure, high basketball IQ, and ability to run an offense would be a welcome addition to Magnolia’s backcourt, especially with Barroca and Lee slowing down. Moreover, Tio’s polished image and charisma make him an ideal choice to carry the Magnolia brand into the future. If the Hotshots want to inject youth and star potential into their lineup, acquiring Tio should be a priority.
#1 Arvin Tolentino
The best possible trade target for Magnolia is Arvin Tolentino. If they can reunite him with Zav Lucero, it would be a dream scenario for the Hotshots. Tolentino has blossomed into one of the top five players in the league, offering a rare combination of size, shooting, and playmaking. Magnolia badly needs a forward with his skill set—someone who can create his own shot, stretch the floor, and provide versatility on both offense and defense. Tolentino’s ability to play multiple positions and deliver in crucial moments makes him the ideal cornerstone for Magnolia’s future. If the Hotshots are serious about retooling while remaining competitive, Tolentino should be their number one target.
