Raven Cortez Takes Leap to MPBL, Eyes 2025 PBA Draft
Former De La Salle University big man Raven Cortez has taken a major step in his basketball career by signing with the Abra Weavers in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL). The 6-foot-7 frontcourt player opted to leave the collegiate ranks with two years of eligibility remaining, making him a potential entrant for the 2025 PBA Draft.
At just 22 years old, Cortez possesses a combination of size, mobility, and skill that could make him a future force in the PBA. His decision to join Abra came as a surprise to many, especially considering he was expected to play a crucial role for La Salle following the graduation of Kevin Quiambao. However, his desire to support his family pushed him to take the professional route earlier than expected.
Cortez had been with the La Salle system since his high school days at De La Salle-Zobel, making this decision an emotional one. In his farewell statement, he expressed gratitude to the La Salle community for their support throughout his journey. His steady improvement during his UAAP stint showed glimpses of the potential that could translate well at the professional level.
In his final UAAP season, Cortez averaged 5.06 points and 3.56 rebounds per game. While those numbers may not jump off the page, his ability to alter shots, finish around the rim, and run the floor for his size has drawn attention from scouts. The move to the MPBL will give him the opportunity to play against experienced professionals, refine his game, and prove that he can be a valuable asset to PBA teams looking for a young, athletic big man.
Given his age and raw potential, it is not far-fetched to see Cortez becoming a highly coveted prospect in the 2025 PBA Draft. However, his stint with Abra will be critical in determining whether he can develop into a reliable two-way big man who can thrive in the country’s top professional league.
For now, all eyes will be on how Cortez adapts to the MPBL and whether he can elevate his game enough to position himself as a first-round talent in next year’s PBA Draft.
