Jio Jalalon: A Player Worth Targeting for Any Team
Jio Jalalon has long been regarded as one of the PBA’s best two-way guards, and despite his current situation with NorthPort, he remains a prime target for any team looking for a game-changing backcourt presence.
An Elite Guard Left to Rot on the Bench
Jalalon, known for his pesky defense, playmaking, and relentless energy, has inexplicably found himself glued to NorthPort’s bench ever since Magnolia traded him and Abu Tratter for Zavier Lucero in July 2024. It’s a puzzling decision, given that Jalalon has consistently been a difference-maker throughout his career.
Despite his inactivity, the 32-year-old guard is far from finished. He remains on NorthPort’s active roster, and when his contract expires in August, he will become an unrestricted free agent (UFA), allowing him to sign with any team without restrictions.
TNT Could Be an Ideal Destination
With Jayson Castro sidelined for almost a year due to a patellar tendon tear, TNT desperately needs a proven guard to take the reins. Jalalon, once labeled as the “next Castro” during his NCAA days at Arellano, could seamlessly step in and provide leadership, defense, and playmaking for the Tropang Giga, especially as they aim for a grand slam in the upcoming Philippine Cup.
While Rey Nambatac has done well filling in, a veteran presence like Jalalon would be invaluable to stabilize TNT’s backcourt. In addition, he already has familiarity with Chot Reyes, having played under him in Gilas Pilipinas.
MPBL’s Pangasinan Waves Also in the Mix
The Pangasinan Waves are also closely monitoring Jalalon, having placed him and NorthPort teammate Allyn Bulanadi on their reserve list for the upcoming 2025 MPBL season. If Jalalon’s situation at NorthPort deteriorates further, a move to the MPBL might happen sooner than expected—either through a buyout or an outright release.
A Hidden Asset Waiting to Be Unleashed
It’s clear that Jalalon still has plenty left in the tank. His elite perimeter defense, court vision, and ability to push the tempo make him a valuable asset in any system. Teams that need a high-energy, two-way playmaker should be lining up for his services the moment he becomes a UFA.
With August fast approaching, Jalalon’s next move will be one of the most intriguing storylines in PBA free agency. Will TNT make a serious push for him? Will he shock everyone by heading to the MPBL? One thing is certain: whichever team lands Jio Jalalon will be getting a proven winner.
