Could Strong Group’s Entry Usher in a New Golden Age for the PBA?
There is growing optimism that Strong Group Athletics (SGA) could soon join the PBA, with some members of the league’s board reportedly encouraging and supporting their entry. If this happens, the impact could be transformational for the league.
SGA has proven they have the resources to build a strong basketball program, having funded competitive teams in international tournaments such as the Dubai Invitational and the Jones Cup, where they recruited former NBA players to reinforce their squad. Their investments in College of St. Benilde in the NCAA and the Farm Fresh Foxies in the PVL further highlight their commitment to developing sports in the Philippines. They even have successful youth basketball teams, showing that their vision for the game extends beyond just short-term success.
A Turning Point for the PBA?
If SGA secures a PBA franchise, we could see five legitimate independent teams in the league:
✅ Strong Group
✅ Converge
✅ Rain or Shine
✅ Phoenix
✅ Stronghorse (the rumored buyer of Terrafirma)
This would be the highest number of serious independent teams the PBA has had in a long time, and it could restore much-needed parity to the league.
Why More Independent Teams Matter
For years, the PBA has suffered from lack of competitive balance, with the league’s multi-team ownership structure limiting true competition. If more independent teams rise, it could lead to:
🔥 A more unpredictable league – No more dominance from just a few teams.
🔥 Fairer player movement – Trades will no longer be lopsided.
🔥 Better fan engagement – More teams can genuinely compete for a title.
🔥 A return to the PBA’s golden age – When different teams had a legitimate shot at the championship.
A New Era of Competition?
If Strong Group and Stronghorse both enter the league and operate as true independent teams, it could reshape the PBA’s competitive landscape. This might not happen overnight, but it signals a step in the right direction—one that could bring back the excitement and integrity that fans have long been yearning for.
We can only hope that this push to bring Strong Group into the league becomes a reality. If it does, the PBA might just be entering a new golden era of basketball.
