Rumors are swirling on Facebook that Magnolia recently made another inquiry about acquiring NLEX superstar Robert Bolick, but negotiations quickly stalled when NLEX countered by asking for rising star Zav Lucero in exchange.
According to multiple posts and fan discussions, Magnolia expressed renewed interest in Bolick — who has been among the best players in the PBA this season. However, when NLEX made it clear they would only entertain talks if Lucero was involved in the deal, Magnolia reportedly refused immediately.
From a basketball perspective, Magnolia made the right call.
While Bolick is undeniably a top 10 player in the league today — a crafty, high-scoring guard who can take over games — guards are currently the deepest position in the PBA. Many teams have a surplus of quality guards, making it slightly easier to find talent at that position compared to others.
On the other hand, Zav Lucero, despite being relatively unproven compared to Bolick, possesses a rare blend of size, athleticism, and two-way potential. Young, long, and versatile forwards like him are harder to find, and his upside could eventually make him one of the cornerstones of Magnolia’s future.
Trading Lucero for Bolick would have been a classic "win-now" move — but one that could have cost Magnolia a lot in the long run.
In short, keeping Lucero was a wise, patient decision, even if it meant passing up on an opportunity to get a superstar guard.
Whether or not Magnolia and NLEX revisit talks later remains to be seen, but for now, it looks like both teams are holding on to their key pieces.
