Chot Reyes Calls Out Alleged Double Standard in Officiating — But Will His Words Come Back to Haunt Him?
TNT Tropang Giga head coach Chot Reyes once again found himself at the center of controversy — this time not for strategy or player management, but for challenging the very officials who govern the games. After being slapped with a technical foul during TNT's 111-103 victory over Rain or Shine in the Philippine Cup, Reyes openly criticized what he called a “double standard” in how league rules are enforced, specifically citing Barangay Ginebra coach Tim Cone.
Reyes was penalized for stepping onto the court during a dead-ball situation to dispute a call. He argued that Cone and other coaches have done far more without receiving a technical.
“There are games when other coaches, like Tim Cone, they cross, nandoon na sila sa technical committee, bakit hindi nila ma-technical?” Reyes said postgame.
“I didn’t curse. I didn’t go halfway across the court like others. I was just near halfcourt. At the very least, I expected a warning.”
The fiery former Gilas coach made it clear that he is not against being penalized — but rather wants equal enforcement across all coaches.
“If they say bawal pumasok, then bawal maski sino ka,” Reyes added. “But if others can do it and I get T’d up for the same thing, that’s where I draw the line.”
PBA Commissioner’s Office Responds: No Double Standard
The league, through Commissioner Willie Marcial, quickly responded to Reyes' comments, refuting the allegations and asserting that referees have been consistent in applying the rules regarding sideline behavior. According to the PBA, there is no special treatment for any coach — including Tim Cone.
Still, Reyes’ comments have sparked conversation among fans and insiders, many of whom believe Cone does enjoy more leeway than most, thanks to his storied career, championship pedigree, and status as the head coach of Gilas Pilipinas.
A Risky Move for Chot
While Reyes may feel justified in airing his frustrations, he may have underestimated the consequences. Calling out the league’s officiating — and name-dropping the most respected coach in the league — puts a target on his back.
The playoffs are just around the corner, and TNT remains in contention for a rare Grand Slam. The last thing they need is added friction with officials or the league office. If Reyes continues to question officiating, don’t be surprised if it affects whistle tendencies or league perception in TNT’s postseason games.
Final Thoughts: Speaking Out or Speaking Too Soon?
Coach Chot Reyes may be voicing concerns that others share privately, but publicly taking a swing at officiating — and indirectly, at Tim Cone — might backfire. While Cone is indeed known for his calm demeanor and perhaps a longer leash with officials, Reyes' comments might only paint him as confrontational.
And in a league where referees carry weight in high-stakes moments, that’s a dangerous position to be in.
If TNT’s Grand Slam bid falters — especially due to controversial officiating — expect this episode to be revisited. But until then, Reyes may have done his team more harm than good with this outburst, even if he raised a valid point.
