PBA Rumors: Starhorse still wants to join the league!

The dream of owning a PBA franchise is far from over for Starhorse Shipping Lines, and for many fans, that’s reason to be optimistic.

Despite failing to finalize a deal to acquire the Terrafirma Dyip, Starhorse remains firmly committed to one day being part of Asia’s oldest professional basketball league.

“Gustung-gusto talaga ni Mam na magkaroon ng PBA team,” a source close to Starhorse owner Merian Hernandez-Reyes told SPIN.ph, referring to the widow of former Quezon board member Victor Reyes, who originally founded the company.

Talks with Terrafirma reportedly fell through due to what PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial described as an inability to meet certain financial requirements. However, Starhorse insiders clarified that it was not a financial problem, but rather a technical issue that derailed the process.

“Technicality lang naman nagka-problema. It’s not a matter of not being able to support or maintain a PBA team (financially),” said the source.

This distinction is crucial because it reaffirms Starhorse’s capability to back a franchise. The company has already proven its commitment to Philippine basketball by supporting the Basilan Viva Portmasters in the MPBL and the San Sebastian Stags in the NCAA.

Terrafirma Turns to Zamboanga Valientes

Following the stalled negotiations with Starhorse, Terrafirma shifted focus to another buyer — the Zamboanga Valientes, led by Zamboanga City councilor Junnie Navarro. Reports suggest the deal is nearing completion, with a July 11 deadline to settle financial terms, including a ₱100 million payment and a five-year, ₱100 million performance bond to the PBA.

While Zamboanga appears closer to entering the league, Starhorse’s ambitions should not be dismissed. Some PBA insiders believe the shipping giant still has what it takes to buy a franchise — either through an eventual expansion slot or a different acquisition.

Expansion Still on the Table?

What remains unclear is whether Starhorse is still interested in pursuing an expansion franchise, a route that may cost up to ₱200 million at current market rates. No updates have surfaced regarding this possibility, but the desire, clearly, has not faded.

Final Thoughts

In a league where fans are increasingly vocal about wanting independent, competitive teams, Starhorse represents an exciting possibility. They have the resources, the ambition, and the local sports footprint to be a solid addition to the PBA.

If and when the opportunity arises again, PBA fans hope the league gives Starhorse a real chance to join — not just for the brand, but for what it could bring to the competitiveness and independence of the league.

A fresh franchise with serious backing is what the PBA needs. And right now, Starhorse is one of the most promising candidates.
