PBA Free Agency: Phoenix signs Escandor because?

It didn't take long for Francis Escandor to find a new home in the PBA, but for those with a keen eye on the league's intricate web of connections, his destination came as little surprise.

The former La Salle Green Archer, a promising young talent, has officially signed a two-year deal with the Phoenix Fuel Masters after being released by the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters.

Escandor, a second-round selection in last year's draft, struggled to get consistent playing time in his rookie season, prompting the Elasto Painters to let him go along with veteran Mark Borboran.

While Escandor's potential on the court is clear, the move is a perfect example of the unwritten rules that sometimes govern the league.

It is not shocking that Phoenix was quick to scoop him up. Escandor hails from a prominent and wealthy family in Davao, a city where Phoenix Petroleum, the Fuel Masters' parent company, was founded. The company's chairman and founder, Dennis Uy, is a well-known businessman with a long-standing personal and professional relationship with the Duterte family of Davao.

For a player with Escandor’s background, landing with a franchise that shares deep roots in his hometown is a logical, and arguably, beneficial turn of events.

He now has a chance to develop his game in an environment where his connections could provide him with the stability and opportunity to truly shine.
