PBA Trade Rumors: TNT trade targets are Barefield and Jalalon?

After Signing Ferrer, TNT Reportedly Eyeing Barefield or Jalalon

After a disappointing end to their grand slam bid and a recent roster reshuffle due to injuries to key players, the TNT Tropang 5G are not done making moves. Fresh off the signing of veteran forward Kevin Ferrer, sources now indicate that the team is looking to add another piece to its backcourt, with the front office reportedly looking at two high-profile guards: Sedrick Barefield and Jio Jalalon. This potential acquisition would further solidify TNT's commitment to returning to the top of the league. The question now for the team is, which one is the better fit?

The Cost of a Franchise Guard

The first thing to consider is the cost of acquiring either player. Barefield, a talented offensive player who was selected second overall in the 2024 PBA Draft, is likely to be a more expensive acquisition. While there are rumors that Blackwater is looking to trade him, they would likely demand a king's ransom for their top pick. Barefield is a high-volume scorer who can create his own shot and is a legitimate offensive threat, and his value is at its peak right now. For TNT, acquiring him would likely mean giving up a valuable asset and a high draft pick in the future.

Jalalon, on the other hand, is a more affordable option. While he is still a valuable player, his age and the fact that he is now with a team that has an overabundance of guards could make him a more attainable target. A trade for him would likely be less costly for TNT, and it would not require them to give up a key player or a future draft pick.

The Better Fit for TNT's System

While Barefield is a gifted offensive player, Jalalon's fit with the current core of TNT is arguably better. The Tropang Giga already have a plethora of offensive weapons in Roger Pogoy, Calvin Oftana, and RR Pogoy. What the team needs is a defensive anchor in the backcourt who can match up with the likes of Ginebra's Scottie Thompson and Meralco's Chris Newsome.

Jalalon is a proven defensive stopper and arguably one of the top three lockdown defenders in the league.1 His "Cyclone" nickname is well-deserved, and he would bring a new level of energy and tenacity to the TNT defense. His ability to disrupt the opposing team's offense and force turnovers would be a huge help for the team as they prepare for a new season.

In the end, while both players would be a welcome addition to the TNT roster, Jio Jalalon's defense and lower acquisition cost make him the more logical choice. For a team that is already loaded with offensive talent, getting a defensive-minded guard who can make an immediate impact is a no-brainer. The PBA universe will be watching to see if TNT can get their man and solidify their status as a championship contender.
