The PBA rumor mill is buzzing with a high-stakes game of "chicken" involving the NLEX Road Warriors and the league’s most popular sister teams. According to several PBA insiders, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and the Magnolia Chicken Timplados Hotshots are reportedly keeping a close eye on versatile forward Javee Mocon, but they aren't reaching for their trade assets just yet.
Instead, the two SMC powerhouses are reportedly waiting for a specific scenario: NLEX placing Mocon on the unrestricted free agency list.
The NLEX Dilemma: Use Him or Lose Him?
Javee Mocon, who signed a one-year extension with NLEX in May 2025, is approaching a critical juncture in his career. While he has been a steady contributor and a "glue guy" alongside Robert Bolick, NLEX management is reportedly wary of his looming free agency status.
The Fear of "Zero Return": If NLEX cannot reach a new agreement with Mocon, they risk losing him for absolutely nothing if he hits the open market.
The "Sister Team" Strategy: To avoid this, NLEX is reportedly exploring trades—ideally to a "sister team" (like TNT or Meralco) or a partner franchise—to ensure they receive a rotation player or draft capital in return.
Why Waiting is the Smart Move for Ginebra and Magnolia
For Tim Cone and the Ginebra staff, as well as the Magnolia front office, patience is currently the most valuable currency. Here is why waiting for the free agency list is a tactical masterstroke:
Preserving Assets: Both teams have already depleted some of their trade capital in recent moves. Acquiring Mocon via a trade would require giving up a rotation player (like the rumored Rome Dela Rosa swap) or future first-round picks. Signing him as a free agent costs nothing but cap space.
The "Perfect Fit" Factor: Mocon is a 6'4" multi-positional defender who can hit the outside shot. He is exactly the type of wing player both teams need to bolster their championship aspirations. By waiting, they force NLEX’s hand: either trade him now for a "low-ball" offer or risk him walking to a rival for free.
Draft Flexibility: With the PBA’s 50th Season ongoing and the 2027 Draft expected to be deep, keeping hold of draft picks while potentially landing a veteran like Mocon is a "win-win" scenario.
The Verdict: A Strategic Stand-Off
NLEX is in a corner. They know that if they don't find a trade partner soon, the "vultures" at Ginebra and Magnolia will simply wait for the contract to expire. For Mocon, a move to either SMC team would likely mean a more prominent role in a championship-caliber rotation.
Insider Note: Watch for NLEX to try and facilitate a "sign-and-trade" deal. This would allow NLEX to get some value back while allowing Mocon to land his desired salary and destination.
