NBA Trade Rumors: Giannis Antetokounmpo “Divorce” from Bucks Heating Up — Orlando Magic Emerge as Surprise Aggressive Suitor
With the revelations this week that Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks are locking horns on his playing status for the rest of this season, and almost certainly “headed for a divorce,” some teams are starting to emerge as potential pursuers.
A new report from Kirk Goldsberry names an unexpected team that could pursue Giannis this summer, among others.
“I actually heard there’s a mystery team,” Goldsberry said on The Bill Simmons Podcast. “I called around as part of this exercise to see who were potentially desperate places for Giannis to land. And somebody who knows stuff told me that Orlando has actually been very active in seeking out Giannis Antetokounmpo’s services.”
“Desperation” sets in after the first round of the playoffs, says Goldsberry. And those eight teams that just got knocked out sooner than they’d hoped start to get anxious to plan a big move to make things right for the next season.
That’s when “desperate” teams like the Orlando Magic, as Goldsberry suggests, along with others who could lose in the first round (perhaps the Houston Rockets, New York Knicks or Cleveland Cavaliers), “talk themselves into” taking a wild swing for someone like Giannis, “whether they should or not.”
“Desperate GMs and desperate ownership groups tend to do irrational things,” adds Goldsberry, referring to the risk they’d have to absorb bringing in a 31-year-old Giannis who’ll be due a massive extension as of Oct. 1 of four-years at between $275–$300 million.
However, he adds, the Magic, if they do want to land Giannis, have a problem: they traded four unprotected first-round picks to the Memphis Grizzlies for Desmond Bane last June. They simply don’t have the draft capital to satisfy the Bucks, unless they involve some other teams and/or make other moves first.
The Magic have underperformed this season, sitting at 39-34, in the 9-seed in the East, and facing a Play-In. They’ve gone 4-6 in their last 10 games, losing ground to the Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets, and Philadelphia 76ers in the standings.
Why the “Divorce” Narrative Is Gaining Steam
Recent reports, including from Sam Amick of The Athletic, highlight growing tension in Milwaukee. Giannis has pushed to return from injury, but the Bucks have been cautious with his playing time. The two-time MVP is on a minutes limit while managing multiple injuries (calf, groin, ankle, knee). He has appeared in only 36 games this season, averaging 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists.
Bucks co-owners have made it clear: Giannis will either sign the massive four-year, $275 million extension he becomes eligible for on October 1 or be traded. Letting him play out the final year of his current deal is not an option they can afford.
Orlando Magic as the Surprise Suitor
Kirk Goldsberry’s revelation that the Magic have been “very active” in seeking Giannis is the biggest new wrinkle. Orlando sits in a precarious spot — talented but stuck in the Play-In mix with a frontcourt logjam (Banchero and Wagner occupy similar spaces). A superstar like Giannis could instantly elevate them into true contention, but the lack of draft capital after the Desmond Bane trade makes any deal extremely complicated.
Any serious offer from Orlando would likely require creative three-team structures or additional young talent/salary matching, as they lack the unprotected first-round picks the Bucks would demand.
Other Desperate Teams Likely to Swing Big
Goldsberry points to first-round exits as the trigger for irrational moves. Teams like the Rockets, Knicks, and Cavaliers could also talk themselves into a high-risk, high-reward pursuit of Giannis despite the massive contract commitment and injury history.
What This Means for the 2026 Offseason
Giannis is eligible for a four-year, $275–$300 million extension starting October 1. If he declines, the Bucks will almost certainly trade him rather than risk losing him for nothing in free agency. The combination of Milwaukee’s struggles, Giannis’s frustration, and desperate teams emerging makes this one of the biggest looming storylines of the summer.
For your international audience on ph-ballgm.blogspot.com, this saga feels familiar — the way one superstar move can completely reshape a franchise, much like a blockbuster PBA trade that shifts the balance of power overnight.
