The Atlanta Hawks have reportedly been unwilling to part with their biggest rising star in a potential trade with the Milwaukee Bucks for Giannis Antetokounmpo.
According to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, the Hawks have "always viewed the notion" of trading forward Jalen Johnson as part of a package for Antetokounmpo as a "non-starter."
Fischer noted that the Hawks are a "natural" trade partner for Giannis since they could own the Bucks' 2026 and 2027 first-round picks depending on what conditions are met.
Getting back the rights to their picks and a budding star in Johnson would be ideal from Milwaukee's perspective, but it is easy to understand why the Hawks reportedly have no interest in moving on from Johnson.
With the 2025-26 season seeing the Hawks emerge as one of the Eastern Conference's hottest teams—fueled by a breakout campaign from their young core—the organization's stance makes perfect sense. Atlanta has prioritized building around homegrown talent rather than chasing established superstars, even one as dominant as the two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Jalen Johnson's Explosive Breakout Season
At just 24 years old, Johnson is having a career-defining year. Through 59-61 games (depending on the latest updates), he's averaging around 23.0 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 8.1 assists per game on 49.5% field goal shooting and 35.1% from three. His all-around impact has him leading the Hawks in scoring while ranking top-10 league-wide in rebounds and assists among forwards.
Johnson's versatility—defending multiple positions, facilitating in transition, and scoring at all three levels—has made him a cornerstone. The Hawks front office reportedly sees legitimate MVP-level potential in him, viewing him as the long-term leader of their post-Trae Young era rebuild/ascension. Trading him for Giannis, even in a package that returns draft assets, would sacrifice that future upside for a high-risk, win-now gamble on a 31-year-old superstar with his own injury and contract questions.
Johnson himself addressed the rumors earlier in the season, noting he heard the chatter (including from his agent Rich Paul publicly suggesting a Bucks move) but received immediate reassurance from the organization that he wasn't going anywhere. "That was probably the first time in my career hearing the rumors and stuff like that," Johnson told The Stein Line. "But I got reassurance from everyone around here that that's not the plan. Obviously, it means a lot."
The Draft Pick Angle: Why Hawks Are 'Natural' Partners
Atlanta controls valuable Milwaukee draft rights stemming from prior trades involving the New Orleans Pelicans (Dyson Daniels deal and others). Specifically:
- The more favorable of the 2026 first-round picks between MIL and NOP.
- The less favorable 2027 swap (with protections).
These assets become even more valuable in a loaded 2026 draft class. For Milwaukee, regaining control of their picks while adding a young star like Johnson would be a dream reset scenario. But Atlanta's refusal to include Johnson kills any realistic path—without him, the Hawks lack the blue-chip talent Milwaukee would demand in a Giannis deal.
The Hawks' current trajectory (streaking wins, strong lineup chemistry with players like Dyson Daniels, Onyeka Okongwu, and others) reinforces their belief: Why trade a rising 24-year-old who's already producing near triple-double numbers when you can build around him instead?
Bottom Line: Building for the Future Over Short-Term Splash
This stance signals Atlanta's commitment to sustainable contention rather than mortgaging the future for a superstar rental. Giannis would instantly make the Hawks title favorites in the East, but at the cost of their most promising young player and potentially stunting long-term growth.
For now, the Hawks are out on Giannis pursuits involving Johnson—and league sources indicate they've never seriously entertained it. As the offseason approaches and Giannis rumors continue swirling, Atlanta appears content riding their hot streak with JJ leading the charge.
