It didn’t take long for JL Delos Santos to find his way back to the bright lights of the PBA. After a brief but productive stint with the Ilagan Isabela Cowboys in the MPBL, the 5-foot-11 playmaker has officially signed with the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters as an unrestricted free agent.
On paper, the move is a classic "low-risk, high-reward" signing. Originally the 19th overall pick by Converge in 2023, Delos Santos became a free agent after his contract expired last January. But don’t let the "unrestricted" tag fool you—this kid has game. In seven preseason games recently, he was filling the stat sheet with 8.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 1.4 steals.
The "Grit" Factor
What does Phoenix get? In a word: Energy. Delos Santos is a quintessential "motor" guy. He’s young, he’s hungry, and he plays with a level of grit that coaches love. He isn't afraid to stick his nose in for a rebound against bigger players or harrass ball-handlers for 94 feet. In a league where pace is becoming everything, having a high-octane guard who can disrupt the opposition is a major plus.
The Logjam: Too Many Cooks in the Kitchen?
However, the signing does raise some eyebrows regarding roster construction. With Delos Santos now the 14th man on the roster, the Fuel Masters’ backcourt is looking incredibly crowded. He joins a rotation that already features:
Evan Nelle: The savvy rookie floor general.
Tyler Tio: The steady-handed sharpshooter.
JC Cullar: Another young prospect fighting for minutes.
That is a lot of "small" guards for one rotation. It begs the question: What is the vision here?
The Charles Tiu Strategy
This looks like a deliberate team-building move by Coach Charles Tiu. By stacking the roster with young, high-pressure guards, Tiu might be looking to implement a defensive system built on relentless ball pressure and fast-break opportunities. Instead of relying on one "star" point guard to play 38 minutes, Phoenix could be looking to rotate these high-energy guys in waves, keeping the tempo high and the opposing playmakers exhausted.
Or, perhaps, this is a precursor to something else. In the PBA, a surplus of talent in one position often hints at a future trade to address other needs (like size in the paint).
Whether it's a strategic "speed" meta or a preparation for a bigger move, one thing is certain: JL Delos Santos has the "luck" (Suerte, anyone?) and the labor to make his second PBA stint much more permanent than his first.
